Frequently Asked Questions

Medicare FAQs – Your Questions Answered

We know Medicare can be confusing. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from Minnesotans.

1. What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, or for certain younger people with disabilities or specific conditions. It helps cover hospital care, medical services, and prescription drugs.

2. What are the different parts of Medicare?

  • Part A – Hospital coverage
  • Part B – Medical coverage (doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services)
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) – Combines Parts A & B, often includes Part D and extra benefits
  • Part D – Prescription drug coverage
  • Medigap (Medicare Supplement) – Helps cover gaps in Original Medicare

3. When should I enroll in Medicare?

  • Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after.
  • If you have employer coverage, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to delay Part B without penalties.
  • If you miss your enrollment window, you may have to enroll during the General Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31) and could face late penalties.

4. Do I have to sign up for Medicare if I’m still working?

Not always. If you have creditable employer coverage, you can often delay Part B without penalty. Timing matters — we can help you avoid gaps or future penalties.

5. What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare?

  • Original Medicare: Parts A & B; you can add Part D for prescriptions and Medigap for extra coverage. You can see any doctor who accepts Medicare.
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C): Combines Parts A & B, usually includes Part D, and may offer extra benefits. Provider networks may be limited.

6. What is Medigap, and do I need it?

Medigap helps cover deductibles, copays, and coinsurance in Original Medicare. It is optional but can help protect your finances from unexpected medical costs. Medigap does not work with Medicare Advantage.

7. How do I choose a Part D plan?

  • Look at your current prescriptions and preferred pharmacies
  • Compare formularies and costs
  • Consider a plan that minimizes out-of-pocket expenses while covering your medications

8. Can I change my Medicare plan after enrolling?

Yes, during the Annual Open Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7), you can switch:

  • Medicare Advantage plans
  • Prescription drug plans
  • Sometimes back to Original Medicare

Special circumstances may allow changes outside this period.

9. How much will Medicare cost?

Costs depend on:

  • Parts selected (A, B, C, D, Medigap)
  • Premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance
  • Income level – higher earners may pay extra for Part B and Part D

We can help you estimate costs based on your Minnesota-specific plans.
